At the past FEMS2019 Congress in Glasgow (7-11 July 2019), top notch microbiologists met at the Symposium organized by the European Academy of Microbiology titled From Systems to Synthetic Biology, which was well attended and well received by delegates.

The Symposium followed an invitation-only meeting of EAM members, chaired by EAM President Philippe Sansonetti, EAM Secretary General Eliora Ron, and FEMS Director of Research & Publications Patrik Bavoil, were current developments were discussed.

Speakers of the Symposium were:

• Victor de Lorenzo, CNB CSIC (Spain; co-chair): Digitalizing heterologous gene expression in Gram-negative bacteria with portable ON/OFF gadgets
• Athanasios Typas, EMBL (Germany; co-chair): High-throughput interaction profiling in bacteria
• Victor Sourjik, Max Planck Institute for Terrestrial Microbiology (Germany): From understanding to application of bacterial chemotaxis
• Karen Polizzi, Imperial College London (UK): Tools for engineering coordinated system behavior in synthetic microbial consortia
• Kerwyn Casey Huang, Standford University (US): Regulation of cell elongation and division under fluctuating resource constraints
