Book: Small, Smaller, the Smallest – Essays on Microbiology

Marking the 60th anniversary of the Slovenian Microbiological Society was the publication of the book “Small, Smaller, the Smallest”. Written by famous Slovenian microbiologists, this book features nine essays that describe the writer’s involvement with their field of microbiology and personal views on microorganisms.

  • Book “Small, Smaller, the Smallest” – Essays on microbiology

Prof. Dr. Nina Gunde-Cimerman devotes her essay to extremophiles

  • Prof. Dr. Ines Mandić Mulec to social microbiology
  • Prof. Dr. Peter Raspor to microbes found in foods
  • Prof. Dr. Romana Marinšek Logar to the use of microbes in biodegradation
  • Prof. Dr. Hrvoje Petković to the use of microbes as cell factories
  • Prof. Dr. Maja Ravnik to viruses, including the new SARS-CoV2 virus
  • Prof. Dr. Maja Rupnik to the microbes found in and on us
  • Assoc. Prof. Dr. Irena Zdovc to the microbes found in and on pets
  • Prof. Dr. David Stopar to bacterial biofilms

Two of the authors, Prof. Dr. Maja Rupnik and Prof. Dr. Romana Marinšek Logar, were also the editors.

The main aim  of the book was to show that in addition to a few hundred better known and harmful microorganisms, there are on this Earth millions of beneficial and necessary microorganisms without which life on Earth would not be possible, as they are indispensable and participate in every part of our daily lives.
